The cheapest way to cut no-shows is to make cancellation trivially easy. Confirmation numbers, two auto-reminders, easy modify-or-cancel inside the booking thread, and deposit rules for VIP sections remove the most common reason for no-shows — guests who couldn't cancel after hours — without forcing every guest through credit-card friction.
Why no-shows happen
Most no-shows are not malicious. They happen because cancelling is harder than not cancelling. A guest decides at 11pm they can't make their 7pm Saturday, your host stand is closed, leaving voicemail feels awkward, so they do nothing.
Solve cancellation friction and you solve most of the no-show problem.
The four-step playbook
1. Confirmation numbers. Every booking gets a number the guest can use any time, on any channel, to modify or cancel.
2. Auto-reminders at 24h and 15 minutes. Both go out automatically and both include a one-tap cancel link.
3. Real-time table release. When a guest cancels, the table opens back up immediately so walk-ins or the queue can claim it.
4. Deposits for the highest-risk slots. Per-section deposit policy lets you protect Saturday-night VIP bookings without killing midweek bookings with credit-card friction.
What about credit-card holds?
They work, but they also add friction at booking time. Universal card holds tend to push reservation-curious guests to competitors. Use deposits selectively (peak nights, VIP sections), not universally.
